Graphics Tools

You will definitely need raster image processing software like Adobe Photoshop, Adoby ImageReady, Corel Photopaint, or JASC Paint Shop Pro to get started. Below are links to some utilities, updates, accessories and plug-ins that you may need for class, depending on what software you are using. I'll let you which know which ones you will be needing for each week's lesson.

Updates, Patches and Plug-ins for your Image-editing software

If you have had your graphics software for more than a few months, chances are the manufacturer has issued one or more patches or updates, whether to fix bugs or extend functionality. Here's where to find them:

CorelDraw/Corel Photopaint

The official Corel web site includes a support library, tips and tricks, and a form for licensed users to order free updates to many versions of their programs.

Browser Plug-ins

Depending on your browser version, you probably won't need all of these, but you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader. All are free downloads.

Utilities, including GIF animation

For Windows users

Paint Shop Pro -- If you want to test drive an inexpensive alternative to high-end raster graphics programs like Photoshop or Photopaint, this is a good place to start. This program is also useful for its built-it screen-grab and animation utilities.

GIF Construction Set -- A shareware utility for making GIF animations. Lots of bells and whistles, and the documentation is both useful and entertaining, in a demented sort of way.

PhotoImpact GIF Animator--another GIF animation utlity, available as a 30 day free trial from the Ulead web site.

For Mac users

Gifbuilder -- A scriptable utility to create GIF animations. It can be used manually to collect PICT, GIF, TIFF or Photoshop images or to convert QuickTime movies, FilmStrip or PICS files, or via AppleScript with other scriptable applications like clip2gif. Freeware!

Graphic Converter -- shareware that converts pictures to many different file formats. The program also contains many useful features for image manipulation such as auto crop, color table editing, scaling, rotation, filtering, and interlacing GIFs. If you have a recent version of Photoshop and are comfortable with it, you can skip this one.

Browser-safe palettes

If you are using recent version of most image editing programs you can probably skip this part--you already have a copy of the web safe palette installed with your software. If you are using and older version of some image editing programs (Photoshop 3.x, Corel Photopaint 6, Paint Shop Pro 4) you may need to download a browser-safe swatch palette.

If these files look like strange text characters in your browser window when you download them, or the browser screen is blank, don't be concerned. If you are using Netscape, just save the file without a specific file type defined, or as text, and be sure to preserve the original file extension. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer to download, save as an HTML file, and then rename the file with the original file name extension.
